Why Colour Is Like Medicine: The Feel-Good Power of Colourful Art in Your Home

A framed colourful abstract artwork by Kate Elkington featuring expressive textures, mark making and bold graphic shapes in pinks, blues, turquoise, neon orange, neon yellow and neon pink in a room with a yellow sofa, colourful cusions and a plant

Did you know that colour isn’t just something we see—it’s something we feel? How cool is that?! It has this amazing, magical ability to lift our mood, shift our mindset, and even give us an energy boost. Which is exactly why I’m completely OBSESSED.

Most of what we do in life, the things we buy, the spaces we create, the people we hang out with—it's all in pursuit of one thing: to feel good. And I bloody LOVE feeling good... almost as much as I love helping other people feel good!

That’s why colour has become such a massive part of my life. My home, my studio, and the art I create are FULL of colour—because of the way it makes me feel: happy, uplifted, and full of life. And I want you to feel that way too.

🌈 Colour Soothes Stress

I'm a sensitive girl (anxiety is never far away) so it's really important to me that I have a soothing space to escape to. You might think that pale and minimal surroundings would soothe me most but it can actually have the opposite effect! A room devoid of colour and interest just makes me feel flat, bored, tired and even a little bit annoyed quite frankly! My soul NEEDS colour to feel calm and happy.

A balance of soft, comforting hues such as light pinks, baby blues, turquoise and lilacs along with some more vibrant, contrasting pops like neon yellow, hot pink and bright red for a jolt of uplifting energy is the perfect recipe for a room that feels calm but alive.

Even when i'm not making art, I'll often just sit in my studio space and surround myself with bright uplifting colour and art. It feels like a little burst of sunshine, no matter how grey and miserable it is outside (I do live in the UK ☔️)

✨ Colour Sparks Creativity

Beige and magnolia literally suck the life out of me! My art studio was the dreariest cream and brown space ever until I revamped it with fresh white walls and some juicy pops of acid yellow and hot pink on the doors and furniture. Adding bold, energising colours to your home or workspace can completely shift your mindset, helping to motivate you and lift your energy levels.

As well as painting walls and furniture in happy colours, my studio is filled to the rafters with interesting, colourful artworks that I have collected over time - they are on every available wall space or shelf! Now, along with a few lush plants, my studio space energises me, helps ignite creativity and make me feel alive.

Sometimes, when i feel creatively stuck, I take to my desk and make small, playful, 'doodle' artworks full of joyful colours like pinks, yellow, turquoise and orange. They never fail to spark new ideas and uplift my mood.

👉🏼 You can check out these joyful, little pieces in my Happy Doodles Collection They all look really cute on a shelf or mantle and will make you smile!

💫 Colour Triggers Happy Memories

Colour has this magical way of connecting us to our memories and emotions. Many of my artworks are inspired by this connection and use colour to draw on joyful memories and experiences.

👉🏼 My Sweet As Collection is full of juicy, sweetie-shop colours that evoke the playful, freedom of childhood - and the excitement of an after school '10p Mix Up' (showing my age here, yes once upon a time, many moons ago, you could get a bag of Pick n Mix for ten pence!)

👉🏼 Whereas my Club Collection, full of bold brights and popping neons is inspired by memories of euphoric, carefree nights dancing with friends in clubs and festivals.

Colourful artwork allows you to invite those happy memories and feelings into your space, every single day!
